What is it?
The R.C.I.A. at Christ the Good Shepherd Parish is the process by which adults seeking Baptism and full initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist) enter into the Catholic Church. There are four stages to the process, and these are separated by three different rites.
An Overview of the RCIA |
InquiryNo fixed duration -- time for questions and introduction to the Gospel; the beginnings of faith. |
Rite of Acceptance |
CatechumenatePeriod of approximately one year; time of nurturing and growth of faith, centering on the guidance and strength that comes from the Word of God as well as familiarity with the prayer and support of the community. |
Rite of Election |
EnlightenmentA period that coincides with the season of Lent; a time of prayer, reflection, and conversion; a call for those entering the Church to purify themselves before celebrating the sacred mysteries. |
Rite of Initiation |
MystagogyThe period for Easter to Pentecost; a time of continued learning about the faith and connection to the Church through service. |
The R.C.I.A. process at Good Shepherd is a "school-year" model with the Inquiry period beginning in September. During the course of nine to ten months, inquirers will work with the R.C.I.A Team and a sponsor from the parish to prepare for Baptism and full initiation into the Church. Those wishing to join the process after September are still welcome to join the group.
